Professional Profiles:
π Dr. Umakanta Pradhan: Navigating Ocean Insights π :
Introduction:
Dr. Umakanta Pradhan, a seasoned Physical Oceanographer currently serving as a Project Scientist at the National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India. His academic journey encompasses a triumphant trilogy, with a Ph.D. in Marine Sciences from Berhampur University, India, culminating in a passion for understanding the intricate dynamics of coastal processes.
Educational Voyage:
π Dr. Umakanta Pradhan, a distinguished Physical Oceanographer, embarked on his academic journey at Berhampur University, India, where he earned a Master’s degree in Marine Sciences (Oceanography) in 2007. His pursuit of knowledge led him to further academic heights with an M. Phil in Oceanography in 2008 and a Ph.D. in Marine Sciences in 2019, both from the same university. Complementing his oceanographic expertise, Dr. Pradhan also acquired a postgraduate diploma in Industrial Safety and Environment Management in 2009, showcasing a holistic approach to environmental sciences. Throughout his educational odyssey, he honed his skills, laying a robust foundation for his subsequent contributions in coastal research and numerical modeling. ππ
Research Odyssey:
Dr. Umakanta Pradhan research canvas spans diverse hues, from coastal geomorphology to numerical modeling for hydrodynamics, waves, sediment transport, and water quality. At the heart of my endeavors lies a commitment to unraveling the secrets of our coastal ecosystems. His professional compass consistently points towards environmental impact assessment studies, marine litter dynamics, and the deployment of oceanographic instruments for comprehensive data collection and analysis.
Work Chronicles:
As a Project Scientist at NCCR since November 2012, He have been instrumental in projects like the “Prediction of Water Quality for Chennai.” Employing advanced tools like MIKE 21, DHI, and Delft3D software, He predict tides, currents, and waves, contributing to five-day water quality forecasts. His responsibilities also extend to modeling the fate of marine litter along the Indian coast, showcasing the application of numerical models for environmental stewardship.
Prior to this, He played a pivotal role in the “Shoreline Management Plan for Gopalpur Port” project, showcasing His proficiency in nearshore modeling and shoreline evaluation using cutting-edge software.
Educator and Communicator:
Beyond research, His commitment extends to education. He’ve shared his insights with postgraduate students at Berhampur University, educating them on the nuances of physical oceanography and marine meteorology. Additionally,HeΒ contribute to training programs at NCCR, sharing knowledge on fundamental oceanography, numerical modeling, and the effective use of oceanographic instruments.
